Chino even intimated several years ago that he and Mogwai have "unfinished business" so maybe someday? Who knows if that song still exists or if we got a different version of it?Īlso, the fact that Chino Moreno of Deftones was asked to sing on a track but that somehow fell through is frustrating. we had finished the song and were waiting for her to arrive at fridmans studio to sing the song, after a while i called her to ask when she was coming and she said she'd lost the lyrics in a hotel in kansas and wasn't coming. she wrote words and even sang them down the phone to me. : we actually did ask chan to sing a song with us (rock action time). It does seem there may have been grander plans for this album, including a female vocalist (Chan Marshall): And a little easier to review with all of those pieces.Įven Mogwai have stated that if there's one valid complaint about Rock Action, it's that it's too short. Not only that, but the companion piece "My Father My King" released 6 months after this album makes it feel a little more complete. Now we can search YouTube, and thanks to some members here we can hear those tracks (and others!) that are rare to find. The access to the Japanese-exclusive tracks now are much easier than in 2001 (you know: paying for an imported album or finding it on eBay - at least the legitimate methods back in the day). It seems weird to review this album nearly 20 years after it came out. What do you think of "Secret Pint"? What were your initial thoughts on it being the album closing track? Album Review This song has been played live 81 times, the last in July 2013. You can listen to this track as it appears on the album here. The melody continues through the whole lyrical part of this song, where it tapers down and fades out, bringing us the conclusion of the original release of Rock Action.įortunately for us, this isn't the end, but back in 2001 it was! At least unless you got your hands on the Japan exclusive album with 2 additional tracks. Then we get Stuart singing the lyrics, softly: The track begins with some low-sounding strings or woodwind instrument, drums after a beat and guitar melody, and then we get a piano melody and relinquishing of the drums and previous instruments, just a mellow guitar and the piano. If you wish to follow along with the discussion, you can listen to this track here. So in a way they work together but it's kind of a jarring experience when you're zoned out and not expecting a track change! I do think the beginning of this track, after the masterful "2 Rights Make 1 Wrong" is kind of an odd pairing.the previous song so long in form and feels like one I could listen to forever ends on an abrupt note, and this song begins on an abrupt note. That means half of the original album has lyrics, which must be a record for Mogwai 4 songs including O I Sleep and Dial: Revenge. The instrumentation (the LOUD Mogwai) is at the beginning of this track only and softens a bit for some lyrics, a rare treat from Mogwai. Though this track is the closer for the album the exclusive tracks and companion piece extend the complexity (and depth) of Rock Action.Ĭlocking in at 3:36, "Secret Pint" follows form for a few other tracks on this album by being "atypical" of Mogwai.
